Mackinac Island for the 4th

So most of my traveling is for work, but occasionally I get to travel with my 2 favorite people in the world and we get to travel for some much needed time off. That was this weekend celebrating our nation's independence.

We spend this 4th of July on Mackinac Island with my family. Why Mackinac Island you might ask. Well first of all, my sister and brother-in-law moved up here to work and live. She works for Mission Point Resort and he works for the Grand Hotel. Both great place to stay, but so very expensive. We live on the cheap and bunk with them in their apartment.

Second, it's great place to visit when you want to get away, but can't afford the plane ticket to the Caribbean. There's a bunch of stuff that you can do on the Island. Bike (because cars are not allowed on the island), shop, eat (fudge is king up here) and people watch.

Finally, it's just a great place to relax. The pace on Mackinac Island is so much slower than my regular life. People bike or walk or occasionally take a horse taxi everywhere and save for the few moronic people who don't know how to ride a bike, it's a wonderful place to hang with your family.

Speaking of hanging with the family, my wife, son and I decide to have some family shenanigans of our own today. The Grand Hotel was having a carnival for it's guests with food, music, carnival games, etc. And we snuck in and lived like the other side lives. We ate cotton candy and had snow cones, Little E got to play in the water and we had some good food. While we don't normally sneak into places, this was kind of fun. I'm such a rebel.

Well, tonight is my last night on the island before I'm jetted off to Boston for some much need planning with my teammate. I have had a great time on Mackinac Island and am happy that my sister and her family live here. I know I couldn't live here, but it's a great place to spend a long weekend.
